Aliso Crowned CIF Champions With 2-0 Win Over Santiago On Friday Night
The Aliso Boys Varsity Soccer Team won its second CIF Title in four years with a 2-0 win over Santiago High School on Friday night at Wolverine Stadium. Aliso and Santiago battled the entire 80 minutes of play in a fast-paced game in front of a boisterous crowd that packed the Aliso Niguel stands.
The first score of the game came early for Aliso as senior Kage Mills headed the ball into the left corner of the net after a Luis Sanchez corner kick in the ninth minute.
Aliso continued to pressure Santiago and Sanchez almost extended the lead at the 21-minute mark with a free kick that was saved by the Santiago goalkeeper.
With just over seven minutes remaining in the half, junior goalkeeper Steele Arlasky came up big once again, making a save off a blast from one of the Santiago forwards. That kept the score at 1-0 as the first half ended.
The second half began with a burst from Santiago and Arlasky had to come up with point blank saves once again. At the 26-minute mark, Arlasky made back-to-back saves on quality chances from Santiago. The Aliso defense continued to hold their ground denying any scoring opportunities over the next 20 minutes.
The clincher came with just seven minutes remaining in the game as senior Nkosi Sampson scored on a bending shot into the upper right corner of the net after a flip pass from Sanchez. The gave Aliso the 2-0 edge that they would not relinquish.
The two CIF titles by the Boys Varsity Soccer team are the lone titles for Aliso Niguel in the last five years.
Aliso will next be in the CIF State Playoffs that start Tuesday, June 1, most likely in Orange County.
